E2R II is starting on 01.01.06. To learn more about E2R I achievements please refer to E2R I page.

The success of next generation networks is highly dependent on the availability of functionality- and feature-rich applications that will be accessible via a variety of network infrastructures and terminals. Hence, various business players (mobile operators, application developers, content providers…) will be brought to work together to develop and provide such services.

The E2R II research scope, the composition of the consortium and the planned outcomes are set to create opportunities across the entire value chain. Provision of protocols stacks, applications and services that are flexible, sharable and adaptable in the current (and future) heterogeneous radio network environment will bridge the gap between hardware/software technologies on one side and applications and services on the other side. By providing sufficient flexibility for the enabling underlying communication means, E2R II will facilitate and support the “Grand Challenges for IST” (e.g. providing seamless connectivity for “the pervasive communication jacke”’ when used in heterogeneous radio environments). This, combined with the requirement for ubiquitous (through any terminal) personalised access to services substantially raises the quality of service, resources and spectrum management.

E2R II will further intelligent reconfigurability management and support service provision platforms that mediate between various entities from one end to the other along the communication path and undertake the bulk of the reconfigurations necessary. This will facilitate simplified application deployment and the intelligent end to end reconfigurability management provides for this issue a solution with unique advantages. It will provide the means to react to the diversity of both applications and service delivery contexts in the emerging highly dynamic telecommunications era.

E2R II will develop intellectual property and will significantly contribute to following major domains of innovation:

  • Reconfigurable radio or software defined radio,
  • Reconfigurable computing,
  • Reconfigurable wireless communication systems,
  • Self-learning and cognitive mechanisms for efficient resource management.
